A new report finds that broadcast and cable news stations woefully undercovered the epidemic of anti-trans violence in 2020. According to the progressive nonprofit Media Matters, network news channels like ABC, CBS, and CNN only devoted 54 total minutes of air time to the 44 transgender people who lost their lives to violence last year, the largest total on record. Of the 23 segments that aired throughout 2020, only 9 actually said the name of a transgender person who had been killed, such as Nina Pop, Tony McDade, Dominique “Rem’mie” Fells, Riah Milton, Merci Mack, and Shakiie Peters. The vast majority of victims were under the age of 30, and nearly all were Black trans women. Of the 54 minutes of mainstream news coverage on trans lives, Media Matters researchers found that the bulk was limited to LGBTQ+ Pride month in June, as the organization has previously reported. During the other 11 months of the year, networks covered the issue for just 25 minutes an average of a little more than two minutes each month.
