Donald Trump and American evangelicals have never been natural allies. Trump has owned casinos, flaunted mistresses in the tabloids, and often talked in a way that would get him kicked out of church. In 2016 many people doubted whether Trump could win over evangelicals, whose support he needed. Eight years later, a few weeks away from the Iowa caucuses, evangelical support for the former president and current Republican frontrunner is no longer in question. Of all major groups that support Donald Trump, the highest percentage of embracement is a group that identifies itself as Christian Evangelical. A recent poll of Christian Evangelicals revealed an overwhelming 92% support of Donald Trump vs President Joe Biden. In fact, there are now prominent evangelical leaders who have come to believe that Trump is (quote) “God’s instrument on Earth.” What changed? Tim Alberta, a staff writer at The Atlantic, has tried to find an answer to this question in his book The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism. During the interview with Radio Atlantic, he says, he can see something dangerous happening in the evangelical world. In his view, the evangelicals are not thinking about Trump in particular or party politics, for them it is good versus evil. And though Trump was not really a star candidate for evangelicals, after securing the Republican nomination he started taking steps to please them. Which seemed to have worked. Meeting prominent evangelical pastors in New York in 2016 and promising them to defend Christianity in this country was one such step.
The Highest Percentage Of Trump Support Is Evangelicals. How That Has Transformed Impact On Lgbtq?
