During elections, people tend to focus on top-of-the-ballot races, including those for the U.S. Senate, the House, or governorships. But in a political era marked by an onslaught of ferocious attacks against the LGBTQ+ community, reproductive rights, and fact-based education, many people are taking a second look at down-ballot races as a way to make an immediate local impact on the political landscape. The consequences of a lack of engagement in state and local politics are very clear. On the state house level, legislation targeting LGBTQ+ inclusion in curricula, trans girls in sports, and abortion rights has attracted national attention. But on the local level, a school board can set curricula, election oversight staff can promote election denial, and a city council can place strict limits on where unhoused people are allowed to live. Sean Meloy, vice president of political programs at Victory Fund, an organization working to elect LGBTQ+ candidates says, “Local races can be easier to win than people think. They cost far less, decreasing barriers to entry, and can pay off in big ways. The same school board that suppresses LGBTQ+ books, for example, can become one that promotes an inclusive curriculum and pushes back on conservative activist groups such as Moms for Liberty.” #politics
