Senate Majority Leader since January 20, 2021, Chuck Schumer stated that the Senate would vote to protect same-sex marriage in the coming weeks, pushing Republicans to take the same stance ahead of the midterm elections. Schumer’s announcement comes as Sens. Tammy Baldwin and Susan Collins are striving to shore up the 10 GOP votes required to pass the bill to codify same-sex marriage. Both Baldwin and Collins met with Sens. Rob Portman, Thom Tillis, and Kyrsten Sinema on Wednesday to discuss the future steps. Apart from Collins, Portman, and Tillis, Sen. Lisa Murkowski has also spoken in favor of the effort but hasn’t shown any commitment to vote in its favor. Meanwhile, Sen. Ron Johnson, the most vulnerable GOP incumbent, has openly expressed his will to vote against the bill in its current form. Collins and Baldwin are currently working on an amendment that clarifies that the bill wouldn’t affect religious liberty or conscience protections.
