American democracy has several distinctive features that are unique and different from most other democratic political systems across the world. The midterm election is a particularly American invention. All 435 members in the House of Representatives are up for election, including 35 U.S. Senate seats and 36 governorships. Currently, there are 220 Democrats, 212 Republicans, and three vacant seats. This is a two-year term. Republicans would need to pick up five seats to take a majority in the House and just one to control the Senate. Nonpartisan election forecasters and polls suggest Republicans have a very strong chance of winning a House majority, with control of the Senate likely to be closely fought. The Senate membership is currently 50 Republicans, 48 Democrats, and two independents who vote with the Democrats. Vice President Kamala Harris gets the deciding vote in a tied ballot. Republicans need to win one seat from the Democrats to control the Senate.
