Cross-cultural coalitions have ruled Los Angeles politics for decades, helping elect both Black and Latino politicians to top leadership roles in the huge racially and ethnically diverse city. But a shocking recording of racist comments by the City Council president has laid bare the tensions over political power that have been quietly simmering between the Latino and Black communities. Nury Martinez, the first Latina elected president of the Los Angeles City Council, resigned from her leadership role last week, then from the council altogether, after a leaked recording surfaced of her making racist remarks. Martinez said that white and openly gay Councilmember Mike Bonin handled his young adopted Black son as if he were an “accessory.” She described the son as behaving “Parece changuito," or like a monkey. She went ahead to make denigrating comments on Indigenous Mexicans from the southern state of Oaxaca, who she termed “feos,” or ugly. The tape published Sunday has sliced jaggedly through the Latino political hierarchy in the state’s largest city. Martinez and other participants on the call, including council members Gil Cedillo, a longtime labor leader and immigrant advocate, and Kevin de León, a former candidate for U.S. Senate and head of the state Senate, faced relentless demands to resign their seats, including from the White House. In her daily news briefing, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Tuesday that President Biden “believes that they all should resign.” #theusaview
