First lady Jill Biden made a stop in Orlando to campaign for U.S. Rep. Val Demings and former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, pledging a vigorous push for equal rights just weeks before Election Day. In a rally of hundreds of supporters outside Orlando City Hall on Saturday, Demings and Crist vowed to fight back against the continuing culture wars waged by Republicans relating to LGBTQ+ protections and abortion rights. Thousands arrived at Lake Eola Park waving rainbow flags and wearing its colors at this year’s Come Out With Pride Orlando, where the three later attended the parade. Demings, the former Orlando Police Department chief running against incumbent Sen. Marco Rubio, said her goal is to “codify Roe v. Wade '' and pass the Equality Act, an LGBTQ+ rights bill. She added she would vote for the Respect for Marriage Act, also passed by the House, which would enshrine same-sex marriages into federal law. Dr. Biden said, “Republican extremists want to go after marriage equality. They’re attacking reproductive health care across the country. Your governor has pushed LGBTQ+ teachers and students into hiding. You’ve been on the front lines speaking up, showing up, demanding the dignity and justice that you deserve.” The first lady’s appearance alongside the two candidates comes after a visit with President Joe Biden to Fort Myers following the destruction caused by Hurricane Ian. #politics
