In 2017, Andrea Jenkins made history by becoming the first black trans woman elected to public office in the US. Now she has made history again after being elected Monday as the first transgender official in the United States to lead a city council. Her latest victory comes after a unanimous vote from the Minneapolis City Council. Jenkins previously served as the council’s vice president. She told NBC news, “I hope that it serves as inspiration for other trans and gender-nonconforming people." It's Happening Out alumnus and trans activist Aaron Phoenix has this to say about living in Minneapolis, "Minnesota is one of the most trans-friendly states in the Midwest--it was the first state to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation AND gender identity in 1993. Since moving to Minneapolis, I've found community, become gainfully employed, changed my legally recognized gender identity to "Other"/Non-binary, and now have access to gender affirming health care provided by the state--including hormone replacement therapy, drug rehabilitation, and psychiatric/mental health care. Moving here from the South and experiencing such an atmosphere of acceptance has had me in a state of culture shock. It's such a relief to just exist in the world, and be treated exactly like any other human--with neither backlash nor fanfare."
