In 1998, the Log Cabin Republicans attempted to join the Texas GOP Convention and were denied. They protested outside, fighting for inclusion after a state Republican leader compared them to the KKK and Pedophiles. Richard Tafel, the former executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans at the national level was there that year. During the protest he shouted, "We’re here to draw the line. No more hatred, no more hatred in the name of God. And we won’t be silenced.†A Republican counterpotester threw a sign at his face in response. Dale Carpenter, the former president of the Texas Log Cabin Republicans continued to fight for inclusion in the GOP for decades before dropping out of politics. Of his time as the President of the group he said, “I do not believe that we made any progress. In fact, I think the party got worse... [The party’s] views have not changed, but the wider cultures have. That’s a very striking thing to me. They are like a fossil from another age. And it’s on everything. I don’t believe they support a single thing that’s happened over the last 25 years.â€
