Today LGBTQ America witnessed one of the most unique moments in our history with the door closed on Donald J Trump and the new dawn of the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Trump leaves the capitol in the early morning with little fanfare. He offends even in the last moments to not participate in the 230 year history of America’s peaceful transition of power. He offends by leaving while still president so he may fly here to South Florida on Air Force One. He is the first President in our modern history to not wait until after the inauguration to fly home and then fly on the jet designated as Air Force Special Flight. He offends as being our neighbor here in the gayest place on planet earth. But the long nightmare of the last four years... is now over. Today’s inauguration was a return to normalcy and the hope of America. Our dreams for the LGBTQ community. Highlights include Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez. But more the bi-partisan support of the transition of America. Bidens speech was particularly stirring as he stood just feet away from where doors, windows and American hearts were broken just two weeks ago on the sedition of attack on our democracy. Vice President Pence was endangered from that attack. So ironic that today he sits on the inauguration stage as President Biden says he wants to represent all Americans. He loudly declared “This UNcivil War Most End.” His speech will be remembered in history when he says “Democracy has prevailed.” Perhaps most moving was Garth Brooks singing an acapella version of Amazing grace, asking all participants and likely the largest television inauguration audience in history to sing the last verse along with him. It is a shared moment for the LGBTQ community that has been long awaited. We arrived today. Joining us live is the Michael Lavers, the noted International News Editor of one of the world’s leading LGBTQ newspapers, The Washington Blade. He has spent the day at the inauguration and we are extremely proud to bring his perspective to the historic moments the LGBTQ community witnessed today.
