The Florida legislature is considering bills attacking diversity rights, abortion protections, undocumented immigrants and free speech in schools in what critics say is a bid by Gov. Ron DeSantis to attract a a hard-right conservative base that could help him win the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. Proposed bills include giving parents more say over classroom curriculum and control of school libraries, and to lock out from state or local government business any company involved in the transportation of undocumented migrants. Two healthcare bills would criminalize professionals who provide gender-affirming medical care to minors and allow any medical professional the right to refuse treatment or procedures including gender-affirming surgery or abortions on moral grounds.
