Early in 2021, Florida State Representative Michele Rayner announced that she was running for Florida's 13th congressional district, a seat currently held by Charlie Crist who is running for governor. If she wins, she will be the first openly-LGBTQ+ member of Congress from Florida, and the first openly queer Black woman to ever serve in Congress. Representative Barbara Jordan was the first Lesbian and first queer black woman to serve, but she was not open and not revealed as having been in a same-sex relationship until after her death. As a member of the state house, Rayner has become very outspoken in her opposition to Governor Ron DeSantis, leading the charge both legally through the amendment process and publicly by leading protests and media campaigns against DeSantis.
