The Michigan Senate has voted to pass new civil rights legislation that would finally establish statewide protections for LGBTQ+ people.
After taking control of the state legislature this year for the first time in almost four decades, Democrats successfully passed an amendment to the 1976 Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA), which would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of categories protected in the areas of housing and employment discrimination. Three Republicans joined the chamber’s Democrats to pass the legislation, 23-15. The bill now heads to the House; if approved by the lower chamber, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has promised to sign it into law.
