House Republicans are advancing legislation prohibiting rainbow Pride flags from being flown outside U.S. embassies in other countries.
According to Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) who is one of the act’s co-sponsors, Republicans introduced the so-called “Old Glory Only Act” in 2021 in response to a State Department official putting a rainbow flag up over a South American embassy in 2018.
The proposed law would only allow U.S. and military flags flown at embassies and diplomatic facilities. The law follows embassies flying the Black Lives Matter (BLM) banner and Pride flags in previous years.
The battle over Pride flags at U.S. embassies exploded during the Trump era.
During the presidency of Donald Trump (R), Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ordered the U.S. embassy in Seoul, South Korea, to remove a rainbow Pride flag and BLM banner from the exterior of its chancery. The State Department at the time said that it requested the BLM banner be removed because BLM is a non-profit organization.
