There are an estimated 100,000 LGBTQ+ students at religious schools in the United States. While Title IX, a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination, protects most students, religious schools are frequently exempt from from having to follow the law. Title IX and the regulations that implement it state that religious institutions do not have to abide by the law if it would be inconsistent with the organization's religious beliefs, according to the U.S. Department of Education. This is true even if the school has taxpayer funding. The exemptions can also be applied to school housing for LGBTQ+ students, allowing the schools to block residency especially in the case of trans students.
