Several LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, including GLAAD, ACLU of Texas, Equality Texas, Human Rights Campaign, and the University of Texas at Austin School of Law Human Rights Clinic, have jointly submitted a petition to the United Nations. The petition alleges that Texas has violated international human rights law by enacting seven anti-LGBTQ+ laws in the past year. Notably, S.B. 14 which prohibits gender-affirming care for transgender minors; S.B. 17 which bans diversity programs at public universities and erases LGBTQ+ spaces; and S.B. 15 which bars transgender students from school sports. The letter also addresses Texas's drag ban, religious chaplain hiring (S.B. 763), sexually explicit materials ban in school libraries (H.B. 900), and restrictions on local anti-discrimination protections (H.B. 2127). It urges the U.N. to investigate each law and inquire about its impact on LGBTQ+ rights.
