Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a virtual Golden Globes appearance made a broad reference to LGBTQ+ and intersex rights in his country.
Mystic River‘s Sean Penn introduced Zelensky, saying “If the freedom to dream was a spear, I proudly present a human being who tonight represents that spear’s most honed tip.”
The message from the Ukraine president comes nearly a year since Russian forces invaded the country in February 2022.
Zelensky started by explaining the impact the Golden Globes had when it was created, honoring achievements in filmmaking in 1943, which was during World War II.
He then finished his message, which was met with a round of applause by the audience, adding that there will not be a third World War. And on a positive and powerful note, he talked about the hopes of winning the war with Russia.
Ukrainian lawmakers last Dec. 15 unanimously approved a media regulation bill that bans hate speech and incitement based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Zelenskyy less than a week later traveled to D.C.
Last summer, Zelenskyy said, he supports a civil partnerships law for same-sex couples. He also showed support for the Kyiv Pride held last year.
