This weekend, Lia Thomas became the first transgender athlete to win a NCAA Division 1 championship. Former Rio Olympic swimmer and Virginia Tech competitor Reka Gyorgy wrote an open letter saying, "I'd like to point out that I respect and fully stand with Lia Thomas; I am convinced that she is no different than me or any other D1 swimmer who has woken up at 5am her entire life for morning practice. On the other hand, I would like to critique the NCAA rules that her allow her to compete against us, who are biologically women." Her letter also points out that she placed 17th, so she would not have made the finals even without Thomas competing. Shortly after, a Twitter account claiming to be Gyorgy that had over 17,000 followers tweeted about it, saying "My finals spot was stolen by Lia Thomas, who is a biological male. Until we all refuse to compete nothing will change. Thanks for all the support retweets and follows I won't stop fighting." The account, which only had one original tweet and a half dozen retweets before it was suspended, did not appear to actually be linked to Gyorgy. Conservatives claim the account was suspended as Twitter was censoring it, but it is far more likely that it was suspended for impersonation.
