Arienne Childrey hopes to be the first openly transgender person elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. She is running to be the Democratic candidate against Republican state Rep. Angela King. She was one of the sponsors behind the state's drag ban bill. The primary election is March 19 and King’s term ends December 31, 2024. Childrey decided to run against King after she introduced a bill that would prohibit drag performers from performing anywhere that isn’t a designated adult entertainment facility. King and Republican Rep. Josh Williams introduced House Bill 245 over the summer. Similar to Florida, the bill would expand the definition of adult cabaret performances to include performers or entertainers who exhibit a gender identity that is different from the performer’s or entertainer’s gender assigned at birth. This is defined by using clothing, makeup, prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts, or other physical markers. King said in her sponsor testimony last month that a community event with adults dancing for children was the bill's genesis. Childrey said the event King referred to in her testimony was Celina Small Town Pride. Childrey also organized a protest against the drag ban bill at the Mercer County Courthouse in Celina and King posted a statement about what happened at the march on her Facebook page. Childrey did not immediately toss her hat in the ring to run for office after King posted her statement but instead reached out to county parties to see if King would have a challenger. Once it became clear there was no one, Childrey decided to run.
