Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth can go into effect — at least for now — after a federal appeals court on Saturday temporarily reversed a lower court ruling.
A federal judge says Tennessee’s first-in-the-nation law designed to place strict limits on drag shows is unconstitutional. The law is both unconstitutionally vague and substantially overbroad and encouraged discriminatory enforcement, according to the ruling late Friday by U.S.
Hayley Kiyoko protested Tennessee’s anti-drag legislation by taking the stage at a Nashville concert with drag performers despite threats of being shut down by undercover cops. Kiyoko is a singer and actor and icon for the LGBTQ+ community, even earning the nickname “Lesbian Jesus” from some of her fans.
For the past two years, thousands of people have descended on a public park in Franklin, Tennessee for an LGBTQ+ pride festival featuring live music, food trucks, and crafts vendors. Clayton Klutts, the president of the Franklin Pride organization, viewed the event as a glowing symbol of how far a small, conservative community had come in terms of LGBTQ+ acceptance.

A federal judge in Tennessee has blocked the state’s anti-drag law from going into effect for now.
The law, which restricts drag performances, was signed into law last month by Republican Gov. Bill Lee. It passed along with a bill banning gender-affirming care for youth.

Cooper told CNN that “This is our worst day, but it could have been worse without this brave response. So we’re very grateful for that.” Five officers initially responded to the call and confronted the shooter. Two officers opened fire, killing the shooter.
