The recent spate of legislation targeting LGBTQ identities is threatening to negate some of the progress Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have made in providing safe spaces for members of the community. Over the past decade in particular, HBCUs have made a concerted effort to address the community’s concerns, from establishing LGBTQ+ centers on campus to changing admissions policies to allow transgender students to enroll. But now some fear the new legislation could have a chilling effect on that progress.
If it becomes law, LGBTQ+ people would be prohibited from bringing claims of sexual orientation or gender identity discrimination in areas like employment, housing, public accommodations, health care, credit, and education. It would also require applications and records such as marriage licenses, death certificates, cemetery interment records, and child support registration to list sex based on biology rather than gender identity.
However, the statement released by School President Paula Johnson states that despite the vote, Wellesley does not plan to change its admissions policies, which do not allow transgender men to enroll. The ballot initiative passed as part of the college government election process.
