Lesbian activist, anti-racist, transgender ally, and two-time World Cup champion Megan Rapinoe announced on Instagram on Saturday that this championship season will be her last.
Wolves issued a statement saying, “Homophobia, like all other forms of discrimination, has no place in football or society, and anyone engaging in discriminatory behavior is committing a criminal offense.”
Away team Chelsea FC also publicly condemned the incident, saying it finds all forms of discriminatory behavior totally unacceptable.
Rapinoe, who has been outspoken about equal pay in sports alongside LGBTQ+ rights, collected her accolade on Wednesday, March 8, at TIME’s second annual Women of the Year gala in Los Angeles. This two-time World Cup winner and lesbian icon dedicated her award to the transgender community.

The 2022 match sparked a conversation around trans inclusion in sport, a trick TRUK is hoping to repeat this year, with the introduction of an all-trans men’s team.
