For the past two years, thousands of people have descended on a public park in Franklin, Tennessee for an LGBTQ+ pride festival featuring live music, food trucks, and crafts vendors. Clayton Klutts, the president of the Franklin Pride organization, viewed the event as a glowing symbol of how far a small, conservative community had come in terms of LGBTQ+ acceptance.
Recently, I sat down with famous event producer Tom Christ. Tom is the co-producer of One Magical Weekend and Bear Jamboree and a Board Member of the Kindred Pride Foundation. Tom, along with his partner, Billy Looper, have been working on expanding their events over the last 15 years to include a more inclusive and diverse audience during one of the most iconic LGBTQ+ events in the world.
Draped in rainbow flags and with many in full drag, thousands took over Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood to march in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community facing discrimination across the United States. The inaugural “Drag March” was a show of support for those identifying as LGBTQ+ all over the nation and as a resistance to recent anti-LGBTQ+ legislation enacted in the United States.
In a victory for the LGBTQ+ community, an attempt to ban Pride flags from flying at state and local government buildings in Florida has failed. However, as threats to the community persist, advocates remain vigilant in their fight for equality and acceptance.

In an interview with Queer News Tonight, Senator Jones discussed his thoughts on the recognition and the current political climate in Florida.
Many gay folk pride themselves on being able to judge whether someone else is gay. However, a study has poured cold water on this idea. The study appeared in the Journal of Homosexuality and the author was Fabio Fasoli from the University of Surrey in England. He took around 130 participants and played audio recordings of other people. He then asked them to say whether they thought the speakers were gay or heterosexual.

The Florida legislature is currently debating a bill, F.S. 827.11, which could be the most anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in American history since the Stonewall Riots in 1969. The language of the law would define “Live Performance” to a standard that would make drag queen performance virtually impossible in Florida in its current format.
