Miami Beach Pride 2023, which concluded on April 16 will be remembered for many things, including Florida House Rep. Fabián Basabe. The pride started on March 31 featuring many fun and awareness events, from Pride Lights the Night and Pool Party, Queer Art Showcase to dinner, pageant, Movie Night, and a pride parade at Ocean Drive.
On April 8th, 2023, the Florida Senate voted 28-12 in favor of a bill that would allow the state to revoke liquor licenses of restaurants and entertainment venues that let children attend drag shows. The bill’s language defined drag performance as “prurient, shameful, or morbid interest” that violates what adults deem appropriate for children to witness.
The Florida legislature is currently debating a bill, F.S. 827.11, which could be the most anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in American history since the Stonewall Riots in 1969. The language of the law would define “Live Performance” to a standard that would make drag queen performance virtually impossible in Florida in its current format.
LGBTQ+ organizations in the state of New York are reacting to the budget put forward by Governor Kathy Hochul. The budget redirects revenue generated by the federal 340B drug pricing program away from community health centers and into the State’s coffers. The 340b program requires any pharmaceutical company that does business with Medicaid to provide deep discounts on prescription drugs to certain hospitals and clinics that serve low-income or needy populations.

The Miami Beach Pride Parade is back this spring, returning to Ocean Drive on April 16, 2023. This procession of floats, DJs, and outrageous outfits draws upward of 170,000 people to Miami Beach every year, celebrating everything that’s great about Greater Miami & Miami Beach’s LGBTQ+ community.
A slew of anti-LGBTQ+ bills is moving through the state Legislature, including bans on preferred pronouns in schools and gender-affirming care as well as restrictions on drag performances that could make public events like Pride illegal.
