The Human Rights Campaign has recorded nearly 300 cases of fatal violence against trans people since 2013 in the U.S., 84% of whom were people of color. In 2021 alone, 57 trans people were killed, and over half were Black trans women.
The recent spate of legislation targeting LGBTQ identities is threatening to negate some of the progress Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have made in providing safe spaces for members of the community. Over the past decade in particular, HBCUs have made a concerted effort to address the community’s concerns, from establishing LGBTQ+ centers on campus to changing admissions policies to allow transgender students to enroll. But now some fear the new legislation could have a chilling effect on that progress.
It’s been said that history is often written by the victors, but in the case of the Civil War, the saying might not hold true. Although the Union army of the North won the war, the Southern Confederacy may have won the narrative that followed. No wonder, many adults educated after 1877 in U.S. public schools never learned about these five accomplishments achieved by — and injustices faced by — African Americans.
As per The LGBTQ Victory Institute’s “Powering Equality” report, representation of Black LGBTQ+ people in elected positions has increased significantly over the last five years, being elected in record numbers.
Black transgender and gender non-conforming people face some of the highest levels of discrimination of all transgender people. The Task Force released the report with the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) and the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) showing widespread discrimination experienced by transgender and gender non-conforming people across the board.
