Ostracized, abandoned, and othered. That’s how many LGBTQ+ youth feel as they try to start their lives. A new place is offering another feeling: Welcomed! This week Sunshine Pride House is a welcoming, safe space for LGBTQ+ youth in crisis. It’s right here in Fort Lauderdale and an historic first in Florida. Many are transitioning out of foster care, while others come in right off the streets. The home is a historic collaboration with LGBTQ+ embracing organizations. Sunshine Cathedral owns and manages the property. SunServe provides programming such as therapy, social outings, and other ways to connect and form their own community. FLITE Center supervises the home and does intake for new residents. Our Fund Foundation is responsible for continuing the funding. Sunshine Pride House is a six-bedroom, four-bathroom, 2,854-square-foot duplex accommodating up to 12 LGBTQ+ young adults. While most of the residents are long term, meaning they’re there for several weeks or months, two beds are kept open for emergency intake. While other area groups have attempted similar efforts, they all came up short. Sunshine Cathedral believes this time will be different. With four of South Florida’s major LGBTQ philanthropies and service organizations, the outlook looks good. Though the Sunshine Pride House’s physical property is paid for from the donations made by some generous community members, there are ongoing operating costs that are incurred to support the programs and services. The Our Fund Foundation is taking the lead in raising the annual operating funds, which are estimated to be $300,000. You can make a donation of any size to this fund via theourfund.org.
