A new study led by Professor Daryl Higgins from the Australian Catholic University reveals disturbing trends among queer Australians. Conducted nationwide, the research indicates that queer individuals in the community are three times more likely to face maltreatment than their heterosexual counterparts, with family being the primary source of abuse. The study focused on the 16-24 age group of queer and gender-diverse individuals. Among them 90.5% of gender-diverse individuals, including trans people, reported maltreatment; while 77.5% experienced multiple forms of abuse, such as emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, exposure to domestic violence, and neglect. These findings underscore the urgency for awareness and intervention.
