A threat of violence against South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community has been stopped, but people are still on edge. A man has been arrested in Canada for making a very credible threat to Pride On the Block, which was held in West Palm Beach over the weekend. So where does that leave security for Stonewall next weekend? In this week’s SFGN, online and on stands tomorrow, I look at the cost of security for the festival. Wilton Manors Police Chief, Gary Blocker, tells me: when you have 40 thousand people in one area, it’s imperative to have resources available on the spot in case of emergency. Better to have them and not need them than the other way around. But that costs money. Last week we reported that security costs for Stonewall are jumping 80 percent from last year - and organizers weren’t given the total until just three weeks until the festival. Now the incident in West Palm Beach, which involved a SWAT team, undercover officers in the crowd, Miami police, New York City police, and the FBI, has refocused attention on safety and its price. As Wilton Manors City Commissioner Chris Caputo wrote last week in SFGN, rising safety costs could make parties like this, and Halloween’s Wicked Manors, price prohibitive.
