A recent CNN analysis of data compiled by the American Civil Liberties Union show that more than 162 bills targeting LGBTQ+ Americans' rights have been introduced through July 1st. This is a massive increase over the 151 of bills considered in the entirety of 2021, or the 76 bills considered in 2020. These bills were spread across 35 different states, 27 of which have Republican controlled legislatures. Most of these bills target transgender and non-binary people, especially youth. This has also been a record-breaking law for the passing of such bills, with 21 already being signed into law in 2022. These laws address youth sports participation, education, healthcare, ID laws, and more. As gender and sexuality become the key platform of the Republican party's evangelical identity politics, experts warn that even more laws will likely pass leading up to the midterm elections and the 2024 Presidential election.
