In the heart of San Francisco's Dolores Park, amidst the vibrant colors and lively energy of Easter Sunday, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence marked their 45th anniversary with their annual celebration. Led by Sister Roma and joined by community activist and RuPaul's Drag Race alum Honey Mahogany, the event kicked off with a family-friendly program. As attendees streamed into the venue, children eagerly participated in an Easter egg hunt, setting the stage for a day of celebration and joy. As the sun shone down on the park, a diverse crowd gathered to witness the spectacle. Contestants vied for the title of Hunky Jesus, each bringing their own unique interpretation of the iconic figure. From "Disco Ball Jesus" to "White Trash Jesus," the costumes were as bold and imaginative as the city itself. However, it was "Jesus Ken" who stole the show and claimed the crown of Hunky Jesus for 2024. He wowed the crowd with his humor, pop-culture relevance, impressive abs, cross, crown of thorns, and shiny pink underwear. It requires us to examine the degrees of embracement of faith and religion and the ramification of events that seem to challenge the tenants and basis of faith itself. Queer God Squad looks at this event as more than just a contest. In a city known for its progressive values and acceptance of diverse lifestyles, the event serves as a reminder of the importance of being true to oneself and embracing authenticity.
