When you think of queer censorship on social media, you may think of a friend who was put in ‘Facebook Jail’ for 30 days because someone reported a random, seemingly innocuous comment. Or, on a broader scale, China and Saudi Arabia may come to mind. But it’s happening a lot more than you would expect, including to organizations here in South Florida. In this week’s SFGN, on stands and online tomorrow, I look at how PRISM is a victim of violating one of Instagram’s policies, but has no idea which one, why they’ve been taken down, or how to resolve the issue. PRISM founder Maxx Fenning, who’s also a regular contributor to Queer News and Happening Out, told me it’s all taken him by surprise. Not surprising: I-G has no phone number or help line. In addition to cutting off followers from important health information, PRISM works to make sure LGBTQ+ youth can live their best lives, it also cuts off the organization from about half its revenue stream. Maxx says Queer Censorship goes way beyond PRISM’s ordeal, and that queer contributors on platforms like TikTok, YouTube and more, have faced baseless accusations for years. To learn more about the fight against Queer Censorship, and how to help PRISM, read my story in SFGN, on stands and online tomorrow. Maxx and Fay also recently sat down to discuss this subject in an interview.
