On Wednesday, openly gay State Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith of Florida's 49th district. Under the new district map that was created by Governor DeSantis in a move that has drawn legal challenges, Rep. Guillermo Smith's home area is now covered by District 37, leading to a need for new campaigning. The new map drawn by DeSantis creates a new dynamic in many districts, frequently giving Republican candidates a leading edge in previously democratic areas. Should Democratic candidates in Florida lose seats in the upcoming midterm elections, the Republican party would likely gain control of the state legislature until the next redistricting in 2032. Guillermo Smith is coming to Wilton Manors, a stronghold of LGBTQ+ democrats, in hopes that he can raise funds to hold on to his Central Florida seat. #southflorida
