Ofcom, the UK’s broadcast regulator, is investigating Rishi Sunak’s appearance on a GB News program after receiving over 500 complaints. The People’s Forum, which aired on 12 February, featured the Prime Minister fielding questions from a studio audience on various topics, including the NHS and his asylum plan for Rwanda. Sunak was the sole guest on the show.
Following the Q&A session, the channel interviewed James Daly, Conservative MP for Bury North, about the Prime Minister’s performance.
Ofcom confirmed receiving around 500 complaints and initiated an investigation to determine whether the program breached impartiality rules by not featuring other political perspectives. In a statement, Ofcom cited Rules 5.11 and 5.12 of the Broadcasting Code, which require programs addressing major political controversies or public policy matters to include a broad range of significant views.
Downing Street responded to inquiries about Ofcom’s actions, stating that Sunak did not regret his participation in the program. An official spokesperson emphasized the importance of media appearances in the democratic process and acknowledged Ofcom’s role as an independent regulator.
GB News has previously faced complaints to Ofcom. Scottish National Party MP John Nicolson, a member of the culture, media, and sport committee, welcomed Ofcom’s investigation but expressed skepticism about GB News’ regard for regulatory compliance.
