Across the country, major cities are losing their "Gayborhoods". Cleve Jones, the famous LGBTQ+ activist and creator of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, lived in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood for 50 years. Jones recently had to move after gentrification caused the rent for his one-bedroom house to jump from $2,400 a month to $5,200 a month. This has been a case in the gayborhoods across the country, including NYC, Chicago, LA, and more. Even here in Wilton Manors, pricing at the Gables at Wilton Park recently increased greatly, with a studio jumping from $1,800 a month to $2,200 a month, forcing out many residents. Combined with more and more LGBTQ+ individuals moving to the suburbs where acceptance is slowing rising, and our safe havens of the gayborhoods are slowly dying off.
