In Florida, a proposed bill by Republicans seeks to prohibit teachers and government employees from displaying rainbow flags, even as lapel pins. The legislation, spearheaded by GOP Representative David Borrero, targets flag representations tied to racial, sexual orientation and gender, or political ideology viewpoints in government buildings, including schools. Critics argue the bill fosters hate, while Borrero contends it safeguards children. The proposal permits flags of U.S.-recognized sovereign states like Israel but excludes those of non-recognized entities like Palestine. According to Borrero, the prohibition wouldn't affect students or government employees outside of working hours or in non-public settings. However, it would be applicable to lawmakers' offices. Some Democrats have indicated their intent to defy the law if Governor DeSantis signs the bill.
