Though same-sex marriage or marriage equality has been legal in all 50 states since a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, it remains prohibited on the largest Indian reservation in the country, the Navajo Nation. The region, being a sovereign tribal nation, is not subject to the decision of America’s highest court. In June, Navajo Nation Council Del. Seth Damon introduced legislation to repeal parts of a 2005 tribal law, the Diné Marriage Act, which outlawed such marriages. Many members of the youngest-ever Navajo Nation Council — as well as the nation’s 36-year-old president — have shown support for LGBTQ+ rights. But efforts to reverse the ban are yet to show the desirable outcome and the pending bill still faces opposition among the 170,000 or so residents of Navajo Nation, where conservative Christian teachings run deep.
