In February, WNBA star Brittney Griner was arrested while leaving Russia and charged with smuggling after a small THC cartridge was found in her luggage. She was sentenced to 9 years in Russian prison, a very steep sentence that many believe was increased unduly due to her sexuality. In July, talks between the Biden administration and Russian officials began as part of a plan to exchange a Russian prisoner for Griner and Paul Whelan who was arrested in 2018 for espionage. Early this morning, Griner was returned home in exchange for the release of Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who had been held by US authorities.
