In March, the Indiana legislature attempted to ban transgender girls from competing in school sports. Republican Governor Eric Holcomb vetoed the bill, saying in a statement, "...the presumption of the policy laid out in HEA 1041 is that there is an existing problem in K-12 sports in Indiana that requires further state government intervention. It implies that the goals of consistency and fairness in competitive female sports are not currently being met. After thorough review, I find no evidence to support either claim even if I support the overall goal." The Republican-controlled state house overrode Holcomb’s veto yesterday in a 67-28 vote. Later that day, the Republican-controlled Indiana senate voted to override the veto 32-14. Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray said of the veto override, “This is a policy that we feel is appropriate. We don’t like to get the state of Indiana sued, but it happens from time to time.”
