In an open letter to the IRS and the Treasury Department, forty members of Congress have asked for a review of qualifications needed for an organization to be classified as a "church" for tax reasons. The letter also asks for the government to investigate the anti-LGBTQ hate group the Family Research Council as well as other-far right groups. The FRC was at one point a tax-exempt charity, but lost its status. With their new categorization as a church, they again become tax exempt. With the new church status, they also no longer have to submit a Form 990 with their taxes, a financial disclosure in which an organization must list, “their board members, key staffer salaries, large payments to independent contractors, and grants given by the organization."
