Pope Francis on Sunday publicly defended St. John Paul II, condemning "offensive and baseless" insinuations that recently surfaced about the late pontiff.
In remarks to tourists and pilgrims in St. Peter's Square, Francis expressed gratitude for the pontiff's memory.
Recently, Orlandi Emanuela’s brother, Pietro Orlandi, appeared on an Italian television program after meeting with Vatican prosecutors. Emanuela Orlandi was the teenage daughter of a Vatican employee who lived at the Vatican. The disappearance of the 15-year-old in 1983 is an enduring mystery that has spawned countless theories and so far fruitless investigations in the decades since.
During the program, he played an audio recording containing a statement by an alleged mobster. The speaker in the recording accused the former pontiff of leaving the Vatican at night in the company of two Polish monsignors in search of young girls to victimize. While Pope Francis has not directly addressed the accusations, his words on Sunday are a show of support for his predecessor.
