Queer News Tonight has previously reported on the organization "CatholicVote" and their "Hide the Pride" campaign. The past month has shown movements to ban books with LGBTQ+ content from public and school libraries, and laws being passed to make sure students "Don't Say Gay". These efforts seem to have emboldened the attempts to censor LGBTQ+ books in more covert ways. The group encourages its followers to bring friends and check out all of the books in library Pride displays, then hide them at their homes so that they cannot be checked out by members of the public. They encourage all books to be checked out, but have a list of 16 books that “push eroticism, glorify LGBTQ identities, undermine parental rights, and are 100% contrary to the Church’s teaching on love and sexuality." One of these targeted books is "Julian is a Mermaid", a book about a boy who dresses like a mermaid to be in the Coney Island Mermaid Parade.
