Warner Bros. recently released character posters and a teaser trailer for the upcoming Barbie movie directed by Greta Gerwig, and it looks gloriously, glitteringly gay.
The plot of the Mattel-endorsed film remains somewhat of a mystery, but one official logline suggests that Margot Robbie’s Barbie will be on a quest for true happiness in the human world after being expelled from “Barbie Land” for not being perfect enough. The movie also features an ensemble cast playing various versions of Barbie and Ken, including LGBTQ+ performers like Hari Nef, Kate McKinnon, and Scott Evans.
Evans, who is the gay brother of Captain America star Chris Evans, plays a version of Ken in the film. Meanwhile, McKinnon plays a “seen-better-days” version of Barbie who is always in the splits. Out Love, Simon star Alexandra Shipp portrays a Barbie who is a celebrated author, and trans actress Hari Nef plays Dr. Barbie.
Nef recently shared her character poster on Instagram, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the film. She also shared a heartfelt letter she wrote to Gerwig and Robbie about what being in the movie meant to her. “Identity politics and cinema aren’t my favorite combination,” Nef wrote, “but the name BARBIE looms large over every American woman. Barbie’s the standard; she’s The Girl; she’s certainly THE doll.”
Additionally, pop star Dua Lipa makes an appearance in the film as a mermaid Barbie, and Will Ferrell’s character poster features the line, “Please call me mother.” The film’s narration is provided by none other than Dame Helen Mirren, who is basically mother.
The Barbie movie’s campy aesthetic and all-star cast suggest that it will have a decidedly queer sensibility. The teaser trailer features a suggestive scene on Barbie Land’s Pepto-pink beach in which Simu Liu’s Ken promises to “beach off” Ryan Gosling’s Ken and Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Ken.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is set to hit theaters on July 2, and it looks like it’s going to be a wildly entertaining celebration of all things camp and queer.
