Since it was announced that the 2022 FIFA World Cup would be hosted by Qatar, there has been backlash from many due to the country's treatment of the LGBTQ+ community. Same-sex relations can be punished by up to seven years in prison, and under Sharia law gay men can be put to death. Oliver Bierhoff, a former soccer player and national team director at the German Football Federation recently spoke out against the selection of the country as a host. In an interview with 'Funke' he said, “What award criteria for a World Cup does FIFA actually apply? Because awarding a tournament is the sharpest sword to push for the necessary change. This has to happen before the award and not after, otherwise you have no leverage left to enforce it. The award criteria must be closely linked to human rights issues.”
