A former Memphis police officer of the year has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Nashville Police Department, claiming it violated federal law by rescinding a job offer after learning he has HIV. The lawsuit, filed Friday in federal court in Nashville, said the officer presented a letter from his healthcare provider showing that his HIV status should not disqualify him from employment. Nashville's legal department has not yet been served with the lawsuit. The department previously defended the decision to rescind the officer’s offer of employment in 2012, saying that the city's charter requires all police officer candidates to meet certain physical requirements which exclude people with HIV from enlisting. These regulations are currently the subject of a separate lawsuit by Lambda Legal.
