"Don't Say Gay" may not officially take effect until July 1st, but many in Florida are already feeling its effects. One Sarasota-area high school student has had a miserable month because of it. Zander Moricz graduated from Pine View School last night at the top of his class. Earlier this month, school administrators told him that he would not be able to discuss his identity as a gay man, or any of his LGBTQ+ advocacy. In a tweet earlier this month Moricz said, “I am the first openly gay class president in my school’s history. This censorship seems to show that they want me to be the last.” In his commencement speech last night, he did manage to discuss his identity. It just wasn't in the open way he would have chosen.
