Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, a nearly 50-year-old decision guaranteeing women the right to an abortion, hundreds of people marched All around the country. I did right here in Miami.
Bans over our Bodies organized and I immediately joined. I had to do something or I was going to burst. We began the protest with several chants – right there in the heart of Wynwood – a crowd joined in and I somehow became a Chant leader.
“When people’s bodies are under attack, what do we do?” – “Stand up, fight back.” – I YELLED – My Body and the crowd would say – My Choice. Some chanters held posters that read, “If my vagina shot bullets, you would regulate it less,” or, “I’m so sick of running as fast as I can… Wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man.”
Following the chants were several powerful speeches from People with their abortion stories. It was such an emotional afternoon.
There were many cis gender women, trans men and nonbinary people all hurt – all feeling defeated – all feeling scared. Local female Politicians joined us, News Outlets and Media joined us. The police joined us. You know who I didn’t see many of?? Men – – Gay Men – Queer Men and that made me sad.
Gay Men – Queer Men – Im talking to you. I didn’t feel you with us – Ive even heard some of you say this has nothing to do with you.
Nothing to do with you??
Who have usually been our first Guardians? WOMEN – How ever that looks like.
When we are still Questioning our Gayness – We are USUALLY drawn to the energy of women superstars. Whitney gaga I can go on! – before Gay Boys had another Gay Boy they usually had a Hag.
I have always been a Queer Boy’s safest friend and someone whom a Gay Boy or Man can always Confide in. WOMAN
One more fact about women – In the USA and the UK throughout the 80s and 90s, lesbians were active and had a huge role in looking after men with Aids – hospital visits, social security forms, what ever they needed. They would take care of the men when even some doctors wouldnt. They would band together and have blood drives all over the country – for the Gay men we loved. It is important to remember that a lot of these men were not out to their families or were completely rejected by their families. They really needed the support which lesbian women provided.
We were there for you. We’ve always been. Now we need you fighting with us.
March. Protest. Scream. Vote!! But doing Nothing Can’t be an OPTION !!! We need you more than ever!!
