Last week, police encircled the Elmhurst, Queens public library in two layers of crowd-control barricades. Next to arrive were the volunteers, carrying rainbow umbrellas and brightly colored posters with sayings like “Libraries are for everyone." Minutes before a family-oriented drag story time was set to begin inside the library, the right-wing protesters arrived. They shouted slogans and obscenities as library patrons maneuvered the cops and fences to access a public building where the book read was arranged for children. Pauline Park, a longtime Queens-based LGBTQ+ rights organizer, watched this anti-drag demonstration, where a few bigots, some of them with the Proud Boys were on one side, and on the other side, people from throughout Queens, both LGBT and non-queer folks who are supporting this event were present.
