During the month of April, Penn State celebrates Campus Pride Month. During the celebration, the Jeffery A. Conrad Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity hosts several programs to spread awareness. Despite these events, many LGBTQ+ students still struggle with acceptance from parents and the community. Non-binary student Lyze said, “The whole potential parents throwing you out and cutting you off, it’s a little harder to do that, I think, when you’ve already paid for at least a semester of college. “I was separated and had the distance if they were really not accepting, so that’s why I came out to them then.” While Penn State students said they feel safe within the university community, Lyze said they feel they are taking a “risk” by coming out — by potentially damaging a relationship with their parents, other family members or friends.
