The website Them.us reports that China has released new regulatory guidelines for its entertainment industry, and the revised rules include preventing so-called “sissy idols” from appearing on television broadcasts. The eight-point guidelines, as reported Thursday in the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post, aim to promote what Chinese regulators call “traditional culture.” Policies include “boycotting daunting wealth, gossip, or vulgar internet celebrities” and furthering a “correct beauty standard” on Chinese TV programs, although the government did not elaborate as to what physical features might meet those standards. Like many of these directives, what constitutes a “sissy idol” was not defined by Chinese authorities. The Morning Post speculated, however, that the term refers to allegedly “effeminate” male musicians, such as the K-pop group BTS.
