In a powerful and emotional press conference held in Phoenix, Brittney Griner, the talented center for the WNBA’s Mercury, shared her harrowing experience of being detained in Russia and expressed her unwavering support for those who remain wrongfully imprisoned abroad and transgender athletes at home. Griner, who had just returned from Russia after being released through a prisoner swap arranged by the Biden administration, captivated the audience with her determination to utilize her platform for positive change.
Griner’s journey took an unexpected turn in February 2022 when she arrived in Russia to play for a team during the WNBA’s off-season. Arrested for drug possession after a small amount of hashish oil was found in vape cartridges in her luggage, she faced a daunting nine-year sentence. However, thanks to the diligent efforts of the Biden administration, Griner’s release was secured in December, allowing her to rejoin her team for the upcoming WNBA season.

During the press conference, Griner expressed her decision never to play overseas again unless it is to represent the United States in the Olympics. This commitment not only reflects her loyalty to her country but also stems from the traumatic experience she endured while detained in Russia. Griner made it clear that she holds no judgment towards other players who opt to play overseas, acknowledging that many WNBA athletes pursue these opportunities to supplement their income. Instead, she hopes for the growth of the league’s audience and the improvement of athletes’ salaries, emphasizing the importance of supporting the WNBA.
When asked about any feelings of guilt regarding her release while others, such as Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich, remain detained in Russia, Griner expressed deep empathy and a desire to help those still enduring such conditions. She shared her dedication to using her platform to raise awareness of wrongful detentions in other countries, urging fans to write letters to the families of detainees. Drawing from her own experience of receiving letters during her time in Russia, Griner emphasized the profound impact that even a simple act of support can have on someone’s spirit.
In addition to her advocacy for those detained abroad, Griner expressed her unwavering support for transgender athletes. She condemned the wave of legislation aimed at preventing transgender individuals from participating in sports teams that align with their gender identity. As a cisgender lesbian, Griner stressed the importance of inclusivity and stated that it is a crime to separate individuals based on any discriminatory reasons. She pledged to make fighting against these regressive moves a priority and advocated for the rights of every individual to participate in sports authentically.

Reflecting on her experience, Griner emphasized the newfound appreciation she developed for each day and the realization that life should not be taken for granted. She urged those still in detention to stay strong, keep fighting, and find solace in routine.
